About Stephanie Mackley

I’m a intersectional feminist and a producer and director and a writer and a human woman. I am interested, above all things, in the feelings humans aren’t supposed to feel. Because I feel plenty of them.

I started writing because I was desperate to find people people who could hang with the messy experience of having a kid. I found it. For my time in the deep trenches of raising young humans, this was my soul project.  When I’m not milking goats or producing and directing videos and podcasts for higher education or getting cheap creative thrills by writing stuff like this, I make orange macaroni and cheese out of the box and then promptly fall asleep on the couch.

  1. Thank you so much for plugging your blog on BPN! I have had so many of the same experiences from the “They grow up so fast…” to the “Look a Blue Ball (signed and annunciated!) It is so validating knowing I am the only one. I have been so surprised that even in my very progressive, feminist, queer social circle, so few people ever talk about the darker side of their parenting experience. If you haven’t already checked it out, I recommend Hillary Frank’s (a contributer to This American Life) blog and podcast The Longest Shortest Time (a brilliant title!). It attempts to address similar issues. Keep ’em coming!

    1. Thank you right back!! I know, right???! How is it possible that as a progressive, feminist mama in Berkeley CA that I most-often feel like I’m surrounded by Stepford Wives when I try to talk about The Dark Side. And THANK YOU for the link to Longest Shortest Time. Incredible.

  2. Thanks for the “like” – I was browsing your blog yesterday, too, and loving it. Yes – hear, hear – for the darker side of parenting which often isn’t shared even with friends – what’s that?? Go figure. I blog over at areyouthebabysitter.wordpress.com and sometimes dip into the darker side ~ and by day, I curate the blog for HealthConnect One, a non-profit supporting families during pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and early parenting. Happy to e-meet you!

  3. Hey i love your page and i find it inspiring. I have no kids but i plan to be a mother in the future. My friend made a facebook group all about parenting. Its more of a parenting community page where they post discussions, have games, contests and people can submit questions to thr inbox to get amswered by fans.

Can you mention the page on your blog and link it? They’re looking for more followers. You can even share it from your personal page as well. You can search “The Madness of Parenting” on Facebook or click here http://www.Facebook.com/themadnessofparenting

  4. I really enjoy your posts Honest Mom 😉 .. you’re a really good, solid, funny writer. I like the one about the “relentless dishes” and will keep following you as inspiration to Finally Start My Blog too! which I’ve set up more or less and Will Start Posting… like soon 😉

  5. Thank you so much for sharing. I don’t even have kids, but I really relate to the way you describe the human experience so well. Thanks for a light in a dark time.
